Bin round disruption at the Scheme Houses

I’ve been contacted recently by residents from a few streets in the Scheme Houses concerned about disruptions to the bin emptying round caused mainly by road works carried out by a utility company. In response I’ve contacted the service manager to ask the crew to call back and empty bins where they’ve been unavoidably missed. That has worked well up to now but residents remain concerned that ongoing road works could lead to further disruption.

I had a walk around the area this morning and noted that while pavements at the gable ends of some streets towards the top of the Scheme Houses (from Byron Avenue down to Milton Avenue) are closed off by utility companies working in the area, most of the rest of the streets further down appear to be accessible at the moment.

However, there’s no guarantee they’ll be accessible in the morning so in the hope of keeping disruption to a minimum during tomorrow’s rounds I’ve asked the service to plan ahead wherever possible and issue advice to residents about what they should do in the event their bins cannot be emptied. I’ve received a response from the crew coordinator and I’ve published it below for residents’ information:

Morning Rob

I have spoken to the relevant team leader re the issues at this location (the Scheme Houses). There is a crew attending at some point today (Thursday) to make an attempt to empty the bins that have not been collected, unfortunately the bins were not collected in some of the streets due to road works and the driver was unable to get the vehicle into the streets.

I have asked the team leader to carry out a site visit tomorrow (Friday) before the crew get there to assess the situation and pull the bins to a collection point to ensure a collection takes place. Whilst the road works are being carried out, and to prevent any further disruption, it might help if the residents could pull their bins to the end of the street where their bins can be collected/emptied.

Hopefully the crew will complete the round tomorrow morning without too much disruption but if there are any specific problems let me know please as soon as possible: rob.crute@durham.gov.uk
