Update on street lighting matters

Over the last few weeks, along with the parish clerk, we have met on a number of occasions with senior members and officers of Durham County Council to put on record our real and serious concerns about the removal of street lighting columns in parts of our area (see post dated 27 August 2014 for background details).

At every opportunity we have told officers that we are genuinely worried about the impact that street lighting removals on roads connecting our villages would have on the safety of our residents, especially in those areas where street lighting is essential in maintaining contact with friends and families.

We have argued persistently that because of the strong and historical social and family links between the people and communities of Blackhall and Hesleden we have a compelling case which sets us apart from other areas across the county. We are not insisting that mile upon mile of rural highway continues to be illuminated at all hours of the day and night, we simply want street lighting reinstated on relatively short lengths of road which are vital to maintain contact and avoid social isolation, especially during the winter months. Residents who have contacted us feel that this is particularly important on the roads linking Hesleden with High Hesleden and Blackhall Rocks.

Earlier this week we held further meetings with cabinet members and senior highways officers at county hall to put forward our plan which would return street lighting to the most seriously affected part of our area, whilst at the same time deliver savings and energy reduction requirements for the council. We have been assured that this will receive due consideration and we will update on progress as soon as we have further news.
